I've always known that the 9-5 life want for me. Or working for someone else in general for that matter. I never had a particular career in mind. But I've always had one goal, and that was to work for ME. But the thing is, I have a very short attention span. And as soon as something isn't paying off, I abort and I start again. I've spent more time creating businesses, building websites, creating products, designing branding, paying for subscriptions and setting up systems.. than I have actually making money. I'm soo sure that there are people out there that can relate!
I always thought it was the business idea that was failing me, or the products, or that the market was 'over saturated'. It wasn't. It was the way I was working. Then then.. One worked. And for a while I didn't actually realise what is was that made that business work. All I knew at the time was that I was going through a break up, I needed something to focus on, and I was willing to put my all into it. I fixated so hard for months. I created websites, social media accounts and pages, booking systems, content, emails.. all the same as I usually would. Except this time, I also fixated on another thing.. my own tools. I created myself a place to keep track of EVERYTHING I needed. Because I was sick of having so many different websites and apps and subscriptions and ideas and not knowing..
where any of them were.. they were drowning in all the other sites and subs.
what any of my log ins were.. I hadn't stored them anywhere. And the amount of social media accounts and pages and sites etc I had set up was unreal.
I was sick of having so many notes in my phone of different ideas i had for my business, and them all just being forgotten about.
I also had to log into my portal and figure out how to use it every time I wanted to track my sales and I was just always burned out and everything felt chaotic. I kept having the urge to reboot my phone back to its factory settings because everything was just getting a bit much if I'm honest haha. So I made my own way. Made myself a spreadsheet, amongst other things to keep me organised and consistent. And as you can imagine.. If your brain works anything like mine.. This was no ordinary, basic spreadsheet.. nooooo.. I sat for literally about a week.. FIXATING HARD on this spreadsheet. And everytime i came across something that I needed, I added a section for it on the sheet. And let me tell you, the tools that I had created became my absolute best friends.
Here's how a typical failed business would go for me..
I'd have a business idea, I'd build it from the ground up.. website, systems, emails, branding, social media, content.. you name it. I'd really fixate on building it and id really enjoy it. Once it was built.. I'd give it 1-3 weeks. maybe 4 max.. It wouldn't work.. I'd give upp.. I'd repeat the whole process. And that's the truth. That is how bad I am.
This this time .. I needed something to focus on. to escape life really. And so I knew I needed to be consistent. But everything was getting on top of me. I couldn't keep track of everything. Until I started using the tools that I had also spent so long building and creating. Honestly, when I did.. Everything became so much less overwhelming. I was logging and tracking everything in one place. See I have a mind that needs to be organised but also throws everything everywhere. I'm usually in a constant state of overstim. And I have that many ideas flying around in my head allll the time that I cannot keep up with them.
Fixation can be both a blessing and a curse. Sometimes I hate that I fixate on things so much. But honestly.. It's al about what direction you throw that energy. I'm actually so glad that I'm an over fixator. Because now I'm able to share the exact tools I created with other people who are just like me. I basically (unknowingly) did the work so that you don't have to.
